This paper discusses the integration of traditional and modern approaches in maternal care within the context of Bhutan. Bhutan, a small Himalayan kingdom, has been recognized for its unique blend of cultural heritage and modern development. Maternal care, in particular, has been a focus of attention as the country seeks to improve the health outcomes of pregnant women and newborns. Traditional birth attendants, deeply rooted in Bhutanese culture, have been instrumental in providing support during pregnancy and childbirth. However, with the advancement of medical science, there has been a growing shift towards modern healthcare practices. This paper examines the challenges and opportunities associated with merging these two approaches. It identifies key areas where traditional practices can complement modern medicine, such as in postpartum care and breastfeeding support. Additionally, the paper suggests strategies for capacity building and training programs to ensure that both traditional birth attendants and healthcare professionals are equipped with the necessary skills to provide holistic maternal care. The aim is to create a sustainable model that respects cultural traditions while leveraging modern advancements to enhance the wellbeing of mothers and their children in Bhutan.
